Marionette Puppets

We looked at marionette puppets and how they moved. Everyone had a turn at trying to make the birds fly.

We then made our own marionette puppets. We used cardboard rolls, pipe cleaners, string and paddle pop sticks. They are fantastic.

We also watched the most famous marionette puppet "Pinocchio" and talked about telling the truth so our noses don't grow!

We have had so much fun making puppets. Maybe you could try to make a sock puppet at home.

Maths Games

Today we played some Maths games.

We played dominoes. Some of the cards had numbers, some had pictures, some had dots and some had number stories. We had to match cards that showed the same amount.

We played 'Toss and Add'. The egg cups in an egg carton were labelled 1 - 12. We put 2 counters in, closed the lid and tossed it around. When we opened the egg carton we looked at where the counters landed and added the two numbers together. We did this 10 times and then we played 'Toss and Subtract'.

We beaded. We had to copy patterns using beads. There were all different coloured shapes. We had to use small and large beads and match the pictures. Our beads looked like necklaces.

We also went on the computer and played games that help us to tell the time on the hour and half hour; and we played games to help us with subtraction.

Shadow Puppets

Today we started a unit on Puppets. We found 3 good internet sites. The first one is a Youtube video that shows an amazing display of shadow puppets. The second and third sites give examples on how to make shadow puppets. At home you could use a torch shining against a wall in a dark room to try to make your own shadow puppets.

Thai Food

Today we had Thai food. We had spring rolls, noodles, beef stir fry, fried rice and ice cream. The ice cream was the nicest thing. The spring rolls had pastry on the outside and vegetables on the inside. The noodles were flat and nice. The noodles had egg in it. The beef stir fry had beef, carrot and broccoli. The fried rice had egg and chicken. by Ella

Transport in Thailand

Year 1 have been looking at the different types of transport in Thailand and comparing it to transport in Australia. Many types of transport are the same such as buses, taxis, cars, planes and bicycles.
But did you know in Thailand you can travel on tuk tuks and samlors? What are tuk tuks and samlors I hear you ask. Well, ask your children to explain these types of tranport to you. It would be good to know if they can describe them well. Maybe get them to reply in the comments with their explanation.

Mothers' Day

Last week we prepared for Mothers' Day. The week culminated in a beautiful Mass and then mothers (and grandmothers) were invited into classrooms to look at their children's work. The children made some fabulous pictures of their mothers. They were all very proud to show off some of the great work they have been doing in Year 1.

We have four new friends in our classroom. They are the special cushion chairs. Each day 4 lucky people get to use the chairs for the day. They are so comfy and we like sitting in them.

Last week we read a story written by Joy Cowley called "Oh, Jump in a Sack." In groups we wrote our own story based on Joy Cowley's book which we illustrated. We scanned our pictures onto the computer and used 'Photostory' to narrate over the pictures. We enjoyed doing this as we all got to write, illustrate and read.

Story Starters

Today we used Scholastic Story Starters to help us think of a topic to write about. Our story starter was to "Write two things about a big apple who plays baseball." Here are some of our great stories:
Last year there was the best apple that plays baseball. The apple hit the ball over the wall. It went to the other side of the world. The people caught the ball. There was a really big man. He threw the ball over the wall. He threw the ball into out of space.

Measuring Length

In Maths we are measuring using paddle pop sticks, counters, unifix, our hands, pencils, paintbrushes and anything else we can find in the classroom. Today In Mrs Attard's maths group we had to find three things, measure them and compare which them to find which item was long, which was longer and which was the longest. You could do the same at home. You could measure the table or the lounge or ...(I'm sure you can find lots of things to measure). Use pegs or coathangers or spoons and see if you can order three items from shortest to longest. Here is a slideshow showing some of the things we measured.

We worked with our buddies. We were given a hand print and we had to colour it in. Then I went to Mrs Cartwright's room with my buddy, Stephanie. I used pink, green, yellow, orange, red and purple. We are going to put our hand prints together to make a friendship quilt.

On the weekend I went to Cherrybrook pool. I went with my mummy and my sister. First my mum had to take my towel. Next we had a swim in the pool. After that I had a shower. Finally I had to go home. I had a fun time.

The Weeks that Was... Week 6

This week, Mrs Attard changed our jobs and added new jobs to the list. Now, everyone has a job. Although it has taken a little while to get into the swing of our jobs. Five people have the job of blogging and four have the job of taking photos. Mrs Attard left the camera at school, so there won't be any new photos until Monday.
The bloggers had to write down in a book interesting things they had done or things they had liked at school.
Next term, the bloggers might get the job of typing into the blog directly. At the moment Mrs Attard does it, but the children tell her what to write.
The week that was: We started on Monday doing PE with Mr Bye. We played poison ball using lots of different balls.
In Religion, we did on assessment about Jesus and the blind beggar. We have read that story using the Bible, a picture book, a flipchart and PowerPoint, so we knew lots about it. We had to write what senses are used in the story and what did the story tell us about Jesus.
In Maths, we were making number patterns. We started with a number then added a number, then added the same number again to make a pattern. Our patterns looked like this:
2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12
3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18
5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30

We made a story about Dan the Flying Man. We read the story and added new parts to it. You can do that with any story. It's fun.
Many children have received 10 stickers. That means we get to choose a voucher. Some of the things we can choose are drawing on the whiteboard, doing a painting, going on the computer, playing with toys from the cupboard or having class joke time. When we get 10 stickers we get 1 stamp on our school merit card. When we get 10 stamps we get to have morning tea with Mr Colyer. Some of us already have stamps from Kindergarten. After our first 10 stickers we have to get 20 stickers the next time before choosing a voucher and getting a stamp. We are all working really hard.
On Friday we finished our Art. We had to paint our hand and then press it onto paper. We turned the paper and did it again. All up we each made 12 handprints (and Mrs Attard was impressed that we did it all by ourselves without making a mess. Wow!) We used these to make sunflowers. Then we scrunched yellow and orange crepe paper and stuck that on the sunflower as pollen. We cut out vases, stalks and leaves and put it all together to make beautiful sunflowers. Charlie and Isabella took some photos which will be added soon.
Mrs Attard is trying to find out how to add audio links to our blog so you can listen to us read. We have recorded our reading already and will be doing lots more.

Ash Wednesday

On Ash Wednesday we went to the library with Kindy and the other Year 1 classes. We sang songs and had prayers. 1 White made up actions for the song 'Light of the World' and the other classes followed our actions and singing. Father John and some of the teachers made the sign of the cross in ashes on our foreheads. They said 'Be good and be kind'. We said, 'Amen'. We are trying to give things up, pray more and be nice people during Lent. What are you doing for Lent?

Shrove Tuesday

Today is Shrove Tuesday. Follow this link to find out more about Shrove Tuesday. In class we made pancakes. First we added water to the pancake mix. We shook it up madly then poured it into the frying pan. We had to wait until they started to bubble before we could flip them over. We then cooked them for a couple of minutes on the other side. We served our pancakes with butter and jam. They were delicious. We had some left over and gave them to the office ladies. Everyone thought our pancakes were the tastiest.

Today we had to use our sense of touch to feel things and then describe what we felt. Mrs Attard had 10 feely bags. We were NOT allowed to look in them. We put our hand in and had to describe the feeling to our partners. We felt cotton wool, sandpaper, ice, cornflour, steel wool, fake fur, tulle, pasta, blocks used for packing and rubber balls.
After we told our partners what the item felt like we had to call out words to describe what we felt. Mrs Attard typed the words and we created this wordle. Can you match the words to the objects we felt?

Our Year 5 Buddies

Today we spent some time with our buddies. It was the first time we had met them. They were really nice. Because of the rain at lunch time we had a shorter afternoon. We would really liked to have spent longer with our buddies.

Our Year 5 buddies helped us with Art. We did some Art about our sense of touch. We had to divide our paper into 6 sections. We used the side of a crayon to do some rubbing over different surfaces to create different effects.

Then our buddies traced around our hands. We coloured them in different patterns and cut them out. When we pasted the hands onto the paper we only glued part of the palm and the finger tips to make it look like we were feeling the different surfaces on the other paper.

Hope you like the result, because we loved doing it.

Writing

Today we did some writing. We got to choose what we wrote about. Most of us chose to write about our weekend. We were also given a special word book to help us with our writing. When we finished our writing we showed Mrs Attard. She circled the words we spelt wrong and we had to use our Word Book to find the right spelling and change our word.

Most of us didn't get time to fix our spelling so we will do it tomorrow. Mrs Attard thought we tried really hard. There were so many things to remember:

capital letters

full stops

neat writing

sounds of words and lots more.

We got tired from all the thinking we had to do.

Friday 5th February

On Friday we went to Assembly. Charlie got an award for student of the week. We had a spelling test on Friday. Rosemary thought it was easy. Paige B played Buzz during Maths with Miss Murphy. When Matthew played Buzz he had to say 'plus' when he got to 5 and 'buzz' when he got to 10. Mia tried to do her best work today. Conor took his tin whistle to Music and he played 'Lullaby'.

1 White went on a walk around the school. They wore glasses with red and green cellophane to see things in different colours. Conor saw the grass area. Charlie saw a green sky! Mia saw red grass. Rosemary saw a green chicken and Paige saw greeny skin.

The world looked different with our coloured glasses.

Outside our classroom is very noisy because of the machines. We need to listen very carefully to hear Mrs Attard.
